Climbing Rope Length Calculator
To lower a climber from the anchor, the rope must reach the top and back down. Enter the route length from the guidebook.
Result
- Rope needed
- 66 m
- Shortest common rope that works
- 70 m
Always tie a stopper knot in the end of the rope. Guidebook heights can be wrong, and ropes shrink slightly with use.
How this calculator works
Rope needed = route height x 2 for lowering, plus a safety margin for the anchor, knots, belay stance and guidebook errors. We check it against common rope lengths. For multi-pitch rappels the same rule applies to each rappel.
